389 William Mocquet

Position : Winger

Played : 2006-07  ( on  loan  from  Sunderland )

Appearances :  7

Goals : 1

William was Parkin’s last signing arriving in November with Sunderland still paying a fair chunk of his wages. The 23-year old French under-21 international who didn’t speak much English had played for Le Havre and Louhans-Cuiseaux before signing for Sunderland in August 2006. He hadn’t appeared for the first team.

William played on the right and made an instant impact on his debut at home to Mansfield with a superb cross for Chris Dagnall’s opening goal. This led on to our first win for over 6 weeks and the last victory of Parkin’s reign. William’s reward inevitably was being dropped after 3 games (Parkin’s psychopathic aversion to wingers continuing right to the end) and watching the final act at Hartlepool from the bench. Keith Hill immediately reinstated him for the game at MK Dons where William rang their full back Lewington ragged (I’m amazed that he still catches their side) and effectively scored our goal though it was credited to the keeper as the ball hit him after coming off the post.

Keith Hill has a lot to be grateful to William for as he was the major architect of the back-to-back 4-0 victories over Boston (in which he scored ) and Grimsby that secured Hill the manager’s job. As Hill said a goal looked likely every time he got forward. He also took the free kick for Simon Ramsden’s opening goal against Grimsby and generally looked well above League Two standard.

Unfortunately Sunderland were not willing to continue the subsidy if we wanted to extend the loan so regretfully we had to let him go. Later in the season he played against us in a loan spell at Bury although Alan Goodall largely managed to keep him quiet.

He returned to France at the end of the season playing for FC Pau and currently AS Moulins
