370 Blair Sturrock

Position : Forward

Played : 2005-06

Appearances : 31

Goals : 6

Blair  was  signed  on  the  eve  of  the  season  after  being  on  trial  pre-season  because  he  "looked  alive"  according  to  Mr  Parkin ( well  I suppose  that's  better  than  going  down  to  Dudley  Cemetery and  trying  to  sign  Duncan  Edwards) . Blair's  career  began  under  his  father  Paul  at  Dundee  United  but  he  never  appeared  for  them  playing  his  first  senior  games  on  loan  at  Brechin  in  2001  scoring  a  trademark  6  goals (in  13  appearances).   He  moved  with  his  father  to  Plymouth  but  became  an  almost  permanent  substitute  making  only  9  starts  in  his  63   appearances  and  scoring  twice. When  his  father  went  to  Southampton in  2004  he  was  left  behind  and  eventually  went on a  free  to  Kidderminster  scoring  6  goals  in  22  appearances. They  released  him  in  may  2005  and  he  came  to  us  on  trial.

Blair  turned  out  to  be  one  of  Parkin's  better  signings  that  season. He  didn't  have  much  pace  or  strength  in  the  air  but  he  had  a  good  football  brain  and  did  a  hell  of  a  lot  of  chasing. Although  16   of  his  appearances  were  as  substitute  he  did  get  a  run  in  the  team  as  part  of  a  three-man  attack  with  Holt  and  Lambert  and  got  a  few  goals  including  a  bizarre  one  at  home  to  Chester  where  he  guided  it  in  with  his  chest. Unfortunately  Blair  tore  a  muscle  in  his  hip  at  the  end  of  January  and  was  out  for  three  months. Although  he  came  on  as  a  sub  in  four  of  the  last  5  games  the  word  was  that  he  had  "no  chance"   of  getting  another  contract  and  that  proved  correct.

Whatever  had  gone  on  behind  the  scenes  it  was  a  bad  decision (especially  considering  some  of  the  strikers  we  fielded  the  following  season)  but  Blair was  rescued  by  his  dad  and  signed  for  Swindon  in  December  2006 . Although  Sturrock  senior  returned  to  Plymouth  the  following  season  Blair  remained  at  Swindon  until  July  2009 . He  scored  his  usual  6  goals. In  his  last  season  he  had  loan  spells  at  Bournemouth  and  Torquay  scoring  twice  in  8  games  for  the  latter. He  spent  2009-10  in  the  Conference  with  Mansfield  scoring  3  goals  in  24  games  then  in  July  2010  he  rejoined  his  dad  once  again  at  Southend  and  is  currently  on,  you  guessed  it , 6  goals  in  42  appearances.
