335 Robert Betts

Position : Midfield

Played : 2003-04

Appearances : 5

Goals : 2

Robert  was  taken  on  trial  having  been  released  by  Coventry. Robert  had  a  baptism  of  fire  at  16  when  he  was  one  of  the  youth  team  at  Doncaster  thrown  into  the  side  by  amateur  manager  Mark  Weaver  as  the  club  struggled  to  fulfil  its  fixtures  in  the  1997-98  season. He  was  rescued  by  Coventry  and  became  captain  of  their  youth  team , Gordon  Strachan  describing  him  as  "a  natural leader". Robert  eventually  made  three  substitute  appearances  in  the  Premiership   but  finished  the  2000-01  season  on  loan  at  Plymouth. He  made  a  few  more  appearances  in  the  First  Division  plus  three  on  loan  at  Lincoln  in  2001-02  but  only  a  solitary  substitute  appearance  in  his  final  season.

Robert  came  on  in  the  opening  game  against  Yeovil  and  was  picked  ahead  of  Chris  Beech  for  the  next  few. Unfortunately  I  missed  his  best  game  when  he  scored  twice  at  Torquay  (his  only  league  goals)  to  give  us  our  first  win  so  I  only  saw  a  fairly  anonymous  midfielder  in  the  Paul  Ware  mould. Robert  then  went  into  contract  negotiations  but  Alan  Buckley  decided  his  wage  demands  were  too  high  relative  to  the  other  players  and  let  him  move  on.

I  thought  Buckley's  decision  was  sound  and  history has  proved  him  right. Robert  went  on  to  Kidderminster  who  moreorless  accused  us  of  being  mean  but  after  9  games  in  6  months  let  him  drift  into  the  Conference  with  Hereford. They  let  him  go  in  the  summer  after  8  appearances  and  Forest  Green  then  discarded  him  after  only  three. He  moved  on  to  Racing  Club Warwick  and  in  2006, Quorn  (where  my  auntie  lives) . He  won  the  Midland  Alliance  League  Player  of  The  Year  (Whoopee!)  in  2006-07  and  emigrated  to  Australia  at  the  end  of  the  following  season.
