Andy  was  our  record  signing  (and  remained  so  for  8  years)  when  Dave  Sutton  persuaded  him  to  move  across  the  Pennines  from  Scunthorpe  for  an  agreed  fee  of  £80,000. He  began  his  career  at  his  hometown  club Hull  City  where  he  scored  54  goals  in  159  appearances  spread  over  7  seasons. In  1987  he  moved  to  the  other  side  of  the  Humber  and  signed  for  Scunthorpe  where  he  scored  87  in  196  appearances. He  had  scored  23  goals  in  1990-91  so  we  were  certainly  signing  someone  in  his  prime.

I   thought  we  were  signing  a  penalty-box  predator  but  while  he  certainly  knew  where  the  net  was  there  was  more  to  his  game  than  that. He  only  had  average  pace  and  his  ball  skills  were  nothing  special  but  he  compensated  with  a  good  football  brain. Once it  was under  his  control  he  never  gave  the  ball  away  and  was  impossible  to  disposess , shielding  the  ball  until  able  to  play  someone  in. He  never  got  caught  offside  either. Two  goals  in  particular  stick  in  the  memory. One  was  the  last  minute  winner  at  York  on  Boxing  Day  1991  which  sparked  wild  celebrations  on  the  terraces. The  other  of  course  was  the  famous  lob  from  45  yards  at  home  to  Lincoln  the  following  December  which  was  all  the  more  impressive  because  the  keeper  was nearly  back  on  his  line  by  the  time  the  ball  got  to  Andy's  feet.

In  his  first  season  he  got  17  goals  in  42  appearances  which  was  respectable  enough  when  you  consider  he  was  playing  alongside  Steve  Whitehall  (who  we'll  come  to  shortly)  most  of  the  time.
Unfortunately,  despite  the  wonder  goal  mentioned  above , things  started  to  go  wrong  for  Andy  the  following  season. Halfway  through  the  season  he  got  banned  from  driving  and  his  form  suffered  as  he  had  to  make  a  long  train  trip  from  his  home  in  Hull  so  despite  being  our  joint  leading  scorer  with  14  he  spent  a  month  on  loan  to  Rotherham  scoring  twice  in  6 appearances. He  patched  things  up  with  Sutton  for  the  following  season  but  now  had  Dave Lancaster  to  contend with  for  a  first  team  slot. In  the  new  year  he  went  on  loan  again  to  Carlisle  scoring  once  in  8  games. He  made  a  brief  comeback  in  March  94  when  Sutton  tried  a  new  formation  but  in  the  second  game  it   was  tried  we  were  thumped  5-1  at  Hereford  - one  of  the  worst  Dale  performances  I've  ever  seen - and  Andy  never  played  for  us  again.  It's  perhaps  harsh  to  class  Andy  as  a  disappointment  but  you  felt  we  could  have  got  a  bit  more  from  him.

He  was  released  in  May  and  his  stock  had  fallen  so  low  he  had  to  drop  into  the  Conference  with  Halifax. Later  that  season  Northampton  gave  him  a  trial  and  he  played  a  couple  of  games  for  them  before  dropping  back  into  non-league  football  for  good  with  Brigg  (with  whom  he  went  to  Wembley  in  the  FA  Vase in  1996  and  finished  on  the  winning  side ) and  North  Ferriby.
